From an employer's perspective, reliable employees are few and far between. We’ve seen it time and time again, and we believe the number one reason employees are repeatedly let go is due to repetitive tardiness or a simple lack of initiative to show up for work at all. In a time where accountability is scarce in the workplace, dependable employees are needed more than ever.
What does it take to become a dependable employee? Here are five good traits to have.
- Show up to work, and show up to work on time. Be intentional and reliable with your timeliness.
- Exhibit good communication skills. Do not make a habit of disappearing without reason for long periods of time without communication. Demonstrate reliability and professionalism through your communication.
- Say what you can do, and do what you say! Set attainable expectations and fulfill the commitments you have made.
- Take accountability. Nobody is perfect. A good judge of character is someone who can admit when they are wrong and can own up to their own mistakes without pushing the blame on someone else. Take accountability for your actions.
- Maintain consistency. Don’t be reliable one week and then disappear the next. Be purposeful and consistent so that others can see that you are someone they can depend on.
Theoretically, if you were to walk into a job interview and look around, you might find yourself in a situation where you realize you might not be the smartest person in the room. You might not be the most educated or the most qualified candidate for a position. However, you always have the opportunity to be the most dependable person in that room. Dependability is a learned trait, and it is not something that everyone has. You can choose to consistently show up on time, exhibit good communication skills, and fulfill the duties in which you have been assigned. Becoming a dependable employee is an invaluable skill that will skyrocket your chances of professional success.
